Ways to Exceed Customer Expectations

As a business owner, is there anything that you can do to exceed customer expectations when it comes to your business? The old adage states that the customer is always right, and while this attitude might get you far, there are other ways of improving customer expectations as well.

Customer expectations are constantly changing. What customers expect from your business during one month might change in the next. This is particularly important to understand during difficult economic times when cost and value are just as important, if not more so, than quality sometimes.

It is also important to remember that if there are other businesses similar to yours in your area then you must give your customers an incentive to visit yours instead of your competitors’ businesses. This might mean offering money-back guarantees and special promotions, providing additional services that your competitors do not offer, and ensuring that your employees are knowledgeable and approachable about the services and goods that you do offer.

It is unwise to assume that your business is automatically superior without also investigating what other businesses that are similar to yours are offering. Learning their strengths, as well as their weaknesses, can assist in you creating a solid customer base for your own business.

Many business owners make the mistake of focusing on ways that they can change their customer expectations when they feel that their business is suffering. However, it is just as important to figure out why customer satisfaction is high when business is good. After all, knowing and understanding that can help continue keeping your business successful.

If the satisfaction of your customers is increasing, then you need to be aware of the reasons why. If it is due to the response and attentiveness of your employees, for example, then continuing to encourage and motivate your employees to excel is important. On the other hand, if it’s because your customers know that your prices are better than anywhere else in town, then continuing to research your competition and pricing competitively is key.

On most every occasion, placing yourself in your customers’ shoes can help shed light on your own business practices. Ask yourself what you expect from businesses that you fraternize. More than likely, you expect to be treated with respect, have attention paid to you, and know that you are getting quality products at reasonable prices.

Other things that customers generally look for are answers to their questions, a knowledgeable staff, common courtesy, honesty, and friendliness. Think about the businesses that you don’t frequently fraternize and ask yourself why you do not go there. Make an effort to not make those same mistakes with your own business.

One thing that you have to be as a business owner is adaptable. The business climate is constantly changing and that’s even without taking the economy and other factors into consideration. Being able to adapt to those changes and to keep up with the times can help when it comes to exceeding customer expectations. Even being adaptable to things such as the weather, for instance, can help with customer service. This is particularly true if you offer goods or services that are needed in times of disasters.

Lastly, knowing what your customers expect out of you and being able to meet those expectations is really the key to having satisfied customers. If you provide a detailing service, for example, then your customers are going to expect getting back a car that is noticeably improved compared to the condition that it was when you took it in. If you own a restaurant, on the other hand, then understanding that your customers are expecting not only a great meal but friendly service and a clean environment as well is valuable.
